Gramio's Mace Cake

This is my Gramio's Mace Cake Recipe.

This is the cake I grew up with and always looked forward to when we went to visit my grandmothers house.  It is a luscious heavy velvety pound cake with an absolutely delightful crust when done correctly. Bake at 375 for thirty minutes reduce heat to 350 bake for another thirty minutes or until done.

3 cups of Sugar
1 cup of butter

Mix these two together.

5 Eggs Separated, yolks mixed in with above ingredients

1/2 teaspoon baking soda dissolved in 1/4 cup of warm water

1 cup of buttermilk
3 cups of flour

Add above two ingredients alternately, starting and ending with flour.

2 teaspoons of vanilla

Mace to taste.

Beat egg whites with 1/2 cup sugar until stiff.

Fold eggs into mixture, put into an Angel Food Pan.
